Why Roman Reigns vs. a Luchador in Mexico City Is a Win-Win

Roman Reigns facing a top luchador in Mexico City isn’t just another marquee match—it’s a chance to celebrate two wrestling cultures on one stage.

For Roman, it’s something fresh. After years of facing WWE’s biggest stars, stepping into the ring with a lucha libre icon creates a true dream match while adding another memorable chapter to his legacy.

Three Ideal Lucha Libre Opponents

If I had my pick, there are three opponents I’d love to see: Laredo Kid, who would bring incredible speed and athleticism against Roman’s power; Penta, who has all the ingredients for an instant classic with his off the Charts swag amazing ring work and intensity; and Dr. Wagner Jr., who would bring the weight of Mexican wrestling history and a legendary name to the matchup.

And if we’re talking about the tournament itself, Penta is my pick to win it. He’s got the personality, experience, and star power to come out of the tournament as the perfect opponent for Roman. A Penta victory would set up a matchup that would feel like a genuine international dream match.

Honoring Mexico's Rich Tradition

This is also a sign of respect for Mexico’s wrestling tradition. Rather than bringing Roman in to wrestle another WWE superstar, WWE would showcase one of Mexico’s own in front of one of the most passionate crowds in wrestling on a Monday Night no less.

It’s a win for lucha libre as well. Millions of WWE fans would be introduced to stars who have helped make the style one of the most exciting forms of professional wrestling anywhere in the world.

The Business of Dream Matches

We’ve already seen how successful these crossover attractions can be. AEW’s Forbidden Door has become one of wrestling’s most anticipated events because it delivers dream matches fans never thought possible. WWE has an opportunity to create that same excitement while celebrating Mexico’s rich wrestling history.

From a business perspective, it’s an easy decision. Roman Reigns versus a Mexican wrestling icon would generate headlines, social media buzz, and worldwide interest.

Bigger Than Wins and Losses

At the end of the day, everyone benefits. Roman expands his legacy, a Mexican star gets the biggest spotlight of his career, WWE strengthens its relationship with one of wrestling’s hottest markets, and fans get a dream match they’ll remember.

Some matches are bigger than wins and losses. Roman Reigns wrestling a luchador in Mexico City is one of them.
